First I will start with a real famous verse...Exodus 20:3 "You shall have no other gods before Me." In the circumstance when we devote more time to ANYTHING or ANYONE it becomes an idol. Which in turn is putting a god or gods in front of GOD.
What or who we put in front of God can be different. It can be anything material ranging from cell phones to compulsive clothes shopping. Idols can be people as well. Remember whatever we invest our time into more than spending time with God, that becomes idolatry.
So what does that say about my life? Do I put allegiance on other things besides the One True God? At times I do and sometimes don't even realize it.
Let me get to my main point here. Where do idols or false gods come from? Well they can be fabricated out of metal or wood. We also can make a god in our mind that we think is Jehovah God. We think we can twist and reshape Him into what we want Him to be. Sometimes we ourselves can become our own gods. We tend to think it is all about us, or should I say me, me, me.
Again...where do gods come from? My Savior Christ Jesus made an important statement in John 3:13. He said this, "No one has ascended into heaven, but He who descended from heaven: the Son of Man."
The God I serve was not made by man. He ascended into heaven. That's pretty interesting to me because at some time we as His children will also ascend to heaven with Him. What makes this a great truth is that He went back to where He came from to begin with. Which no man has ever seen. He came from being worshipped by angels. He came from perfect union with God the Father. He came from having ALL authority over ALL creation and the universe. WOW!! To me that is mind boggling. He came to this corrupt earth in which we did to ourselves by sinning to take the scorn and shame of our sin.
Has any of our idols ever descended from heaven? Has my ipod or tv reality shows in which I spend hours on top of hours watching ever died on the cross only to rise again? Has my lovely daughter in which I love very much ever been in charge of the happenings of the universe? NO that is absurd to even think.
How could I ever think of having anything in front of the One who spared me from His wrath? I pray and keep watch that I may keep His commands and the greatest is that I love Him with all my heart, mind, and soul.
The Real God is the only One for me!
